Following a brief run of Northeast shows earlier this month and a quick jump across the Atlantic this past weekend to perform at Summer Tyne's Americana Weekend in Gateshead, UK, Devon Sproule returns home to a Charlottesville stage, performing at iS Venue this Thursday (July 30th). Joining Devon on the triple-bill are singer-songwriters Andrew Rose Gregory and Carsie Blanton. Doors at 7:30pm. $7.
Thursday night's Charlottesville concert is the first local show for Sproule since she performed at Esmont Rocks back in May. Her brand new album, ¡Don't Hurry for Heaven!, has already been released in the UK via Tin Angel Records and fans stateside should expect a U.S. release sometime in early 2010. ¡Don't Hurry for Heaven! is the follow-up to Devon Sproule's critically-acclaimed Keep Your Silver Shined, which has received rave reviews on both sides of the Big Pond.
Thursday's show at iS Venue is also the first of three local performances for Sproule in the coming months. Devon will perform at Monticello's Thomas Jefferson Visitors Center (along with Adrienne Young) on Saturday, August 8th (a benefit for the Heritage Harvest Festival) and she will appear at the Crozet Music Festival (with Paul Curreri) on Saturday, October 3rd. The live performance above for the song "Julie" was shot at the Tin Angel in Conventry and is the second track from her forthcoming album. Based out of Brooklyn, NY (with southwestern Virginia roots), Andrew Rose Gregory in no stranger to Charlottesville. In addition to having performed locally in the past, Gregory has also taught songwriting for four summers at UVA's Young Writers' Workshop. His most recent album The Color of Red and Other Songs About the Power of Love was released in 2008 and has drawn comparisons to such songwriting greats as John Prine and Jackson Browne. For her part, Philly's Carsie Blanton (who also has Virginia ties, having grown up in Luray) just released her second full-length studio Buoy back on July 16th. Blanton's Charlottesville appearance is the last stop on her eight-city East Coast tour in support of the new record. [listen to and purchase songs from the new album on Blanton's MySpace page]
